Setting SMART Goals For Success

Do you have a goal that you dream of achieving but the mere thought sends you into a panic or fear of failure? At some point, we all have dreams and aspirations that may seem out of reach. By setting smart goals for success, you are allowing yourself to lay down the proper foundation for you to get closer to your goal one day at a time.

When beginning your fitness journey, I encourage you to write down a few long term goals on a piece of paper. On another piece of paper, jot down all of the smaller, short term and more achievable goals that are needed to be accomplished in order to achieve the long term/overall goal.

 

Stating, “I want to lose weight” is not going to get you anywhere in the long run unless you answer some important questions first.  How will you lose weight? How much weight do you want to lose? Do you have a deadline? Will you still be at a healthy body weight after dropping few pounds? Why do you want to lose weight?

By setting goals that are S.M.A.R.T., you will be able to answer these questions as well as set yourself up for success!

SMART is an acronym that stands for-

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Example of Setting a SMART Goal

Specific Goal: I want to lose 10 pounds in order to keep my weight in the “healthy” zone on the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale for my height.

Measurable: I can measure my current weight as a starting weight and log my weight once a week (Sundays).

Attainable: I currently eat too much and I am not active enough. I can slightly lower my caloric intake and begin to work out 3 times a week after work so that I will be able to get closer to my goal.

Relevant: Since my clothes are becoming tighter and my Body Mass Index is almost in the overweight range for my height, it is relevant for me to become more proactive about maintaining my health.

Time-bound: I am going to give myself 3 months to lose 10 pounds. This means I would lose less than 1 pound per week which is at a safe, healthy and realistic rate of weight loss.

By following the criteria that you outlined in your SMART goal, you will be able to accomplish the small goals like tracking your weight each week, being more active or monitoring your caloric intake in order to meet your specific and original goal of wanting to lose 10 pounds. Many people begin with the end in mind but never focus on all of the steps needed to get you there.

Dream Big, But Be Realistic...

Whatever your goals and dreams may be, whether it be health and fitness related or about your job or relationships, setting smart goals will help you reach your full potential and set yourself up for the successful life that you are meant to live! By having a plan of action with your smart goals to help you along the way, you can keep yourself in check and make changes for the better. Just remember to be realistic and flexible with the goals you set for yourself. Getting to ahead of yourself and creating unrealistic deadlines will lead you to failure and frustration. Begin with specific and attainable smart goals to stay positive and on the right track.

Benefits of Logging Your Workouts

If you have been lacking progress in the gym, it may be time to learn the benefits of logging your workouts.This is a great way to maximize your time spent training by knowing how strong your currently are and when it is appropriate to push yourself. To gain the benefits of logging your workouts, start logging your training in a designated workout journal or go high tech and download a fitness app that allows you to input your workout data By keeping track of the date, specific exercise, weight used, amount of repetitions performed, and how you feel, you will start to see the benefits of logging your workouts since you can visually see which ways you can challenge yourself in order to see change.

Break You Own Records and Create New "Personal Bests"

You can begin logging your workouts at any time in your fitness journey. Once you get started the key it to remain consistent. Start by writing the date of your workout and the exercises performed as well as the repetitions and how you felt during the workout. The same goes for the cardio portion of your workouts. Track the date, time, exercises performed, distance, levels and important notes. Over time you will be able to look back at a specific workout and repeat the workout. The second time around you should know how much you can challenge yourself by either trying to complete the cardio faster, go a longer distance or use heavier weights/perform more repetitions.

 

By logging a base line of athletic ability on certain moves and exercises you will also have a reminder of how strong you have become.

If you were to simply “think” about how far you have progressed when it comes to physical strength and stamina, you would easily forget a lot of the small accomplishments that brought you to the fitness level you are at today. But when you look back at where you were 6 months prior in your journal and can visibly see that you improved you maximum number of repetitions or can now perform 3 more pull ups, it will be hard not to be proud of yourself and be motivated by your own accomplishments.

A workout log is also a great tool to use when you feel like you have hit a plateau in your fitness routine. Review old routines and try to make them more difficult and challenging by adding a few pounds of resistance or more repetitions that will push you a bit further each time you train.

Keep your workout log as detailed as possible.

After a while, you may get sick and tired of doing it, but I promise that if you stay consistent with logging your workouts each day, you will be surprised at how much YOU are able to accomplish. There are several ways to track your progress, so don’t feel limited. Building consistency will also build a habit that lasts long term. Should You Work Out with a Partner

Which is your best option, trying to work out with a partner or training solo? Many enjoy solitude and simply want to blast music on their headphones while training. On the other hand, there are those who would not be caught dead working out alone and need a partner. As long as you are happy and getting in an effective workout then it does not matter who you train with, but if you need a bit of a change, read some of the points below if you are still unsure if you should train with a partner or go at it alone.

Reasons to Train Solo:

-Work at your own pace.
-Stay focused on your goal.
-Do not have to worry on others arriving on time or the pressure of making it on time if you happen to be running late.
-Stay as long or as little as needed.
-Don’t have to worry about “entertaining” someone by talking or gossiping to pass the time.
-Blast as much music as you would like.

Reasons to Train with a Partner:

-Someone to give you extra motivation.
-Can push and encourage each other.
-Have someone to hold you accountable.
-Someone to spot you when using heavier weight.

I personally enjoy training by myself so that I do not have to wait around for others and can go at my own pace. When I need a spotter, I simply ask someone who is working out near me to help me out during their rest/recovery period. I have never had anyone refuse; most people love to help others out.

How To Pick The Right Partner

If you choose to train with a partner, make sure that your gym partner is just as focused and dedicated as you are. As training partners, you should be able to push each other to get better and stronger, not be chit-chat buddies at the water cooler. With all of your workouts, keeping your intensity levels high is crucial to see change. Talking in between sets and catching up on the latest gossip is only going to serve as a distraction from your goals, your heart rate drops and you may lose focus. If the only way to avoid this is training alone then so be it!

Training should be your time to release daily tension, boost your health and improve your physique. If you feel like your training partner is always late, making excuses and not adding anything to your workout, then it may be time to ditch them and train solo. You can also find a happy medium and pick a few days a week where you have training dates set and the other days you train alone. This may help you get the most out of your workouts. Sometimes it is good to have a bit of a change and having someone with you may make you work even harder. There is nothing wrong with a little healthy competition.

If you are just starting out on your fitness journey, try to pick a training partner who is reliable and is also goal oriented. If you are an advanced gym goer, try to choose a training partner who is at your level of physical fitness or maybe a bit more advanced. This will ensure that you can push each other and you may be able to learn a thing or two from them and their training style. You want to make sure you’re your training partner does not give you the chance to slack off and work at a beginner level- that would defeat the whole purpose.

If you are advanced and are looking to help someone get started, pick a separate time from your training schedule to show them the ropes and help out. We ALL started somewhere with very little knowledge of the weight room, which can be a very scary place to some. So be kind, give back and always try to lend a helping hand to those who ask for it. Be sure to help others who may not be as comfortable and confident in the gym as you are so that you can help improve their life too!
