What if I told you that you can save some cash by incorporating simple healthy food and shopping tips into your grocery store visits? At times is can be simpler that we think, but our fast paced society makes it easy to spend money on fast food and vending machines easy outs when trying to make healthy choices. Want to save some cash? Then stop eating out all of the time! Try creating your own delicious meals at home. Not only will you save money, but you will also reduce your waist line and eliminate the unnecessary ingredients that may be hiding in pre-prepared and processed foods. While this sounds like a wonderful idea… where do you start? If you are new ready to get your healthy lifestyle in gear, check out the 4 tips below that will give you pointers on how to shop for healthy food while in the endless sea of food at the grocery store.

4 Must Try Grocery Shopping Tips

Shop the perimeter- Most stores have the fresh produce and meat section on the walls of the building. Here is where you will find items with little to no extra ingredients at their simplest forms. When you start creeping into the isles, you will begin to find boxed items that are loaded with sodium and preservatives to increase shelf life.

Be a label reader- Ever wonder what exactly it is that you are eating? Well turn the box around and check out the nutrition facts panel. You will be surprised at the crazy amount of chemicals that are found in some of the daily food staples you are eating. If something looks funny or you cannot pronounce it on the label, try to shop for a healthier and different option that has less ingredients and less preservatives.

Be skeptical- “Low Fat, Sugar Free, Low Sodium”. These claims are all over the common food items and it is almost expected that our food is labeled with some type of “healthy-choice” claim. Just because the food has a “too good to be true” label on it does not mean it is actually good for you. If an item is missing fat, sugar, sodium or carbs, there is a great chance that other items have been added to keep the flavor and consistency similar to the original version. Sometimes it is better to indulge in moderation on the original product instead of dealing with too much of the fake and overly processed type.

Go for fresh or frozen- When learning how to shop for health food, always go with the fresh or frozen option as opposed to the canned versions when possible. For example get fresh chicken breast as opposed to the canned version that is full of salt and tons of preservatives. The same goes for fruit. Get the fresh whole fruit rather than the canned version that has added sugar and syrups in it to make it sweeter and last longer. If you choose frozen, remember to read the label on the back and make sure that it is not loaded with sodium or a creamy sauce which will just add more calories.  Next time you try to take the cheaper or easier way out, think about this- fresh meat and fruit will spoil in a matter of days- isn’t it kind of freaky if it can last for months when packaged on a shelf?

If you love running but are stuck in a training rut, switch up your routine with this advanced high intensity sprint workout. If you typically run at a moderate pace and are specifically doing steady state endurance training, this sprint workout is the perfect amount of high intensity to offer you a new challenge. The high intensity of this advanced sprint workout will help you slash your workout time in half and is the perfect routine when you are running short on time. If this is your first time trying sprint intervals, be sure to go at your own pace and listen to your body. The workout listed below is advanced. Keep the incline the same for all levels of experience. Simply adjust the speed as needed when beginning.

Since this workout is done on the incline of a treadmill, you may notice that different muscles in your legs are sore. This is probably due to the fact that many of your cardio sessions on the treadmill were probably performed at little to no incline. If you normally run long distances, you primarily use slow twitch fibers in your muscles which help you out with endurance training. Sprint work is explosive and fast which recruits fast twitch fibers. Think about the legs of a marathon runner vs a sprinter. The sprinter is usually more muscular and has more shape to their legs. This is due to the type of training each athlete performs.  This advanced high intensity workout will challenge your cardiovascular system as well as help sculpt your legs while shedding some fat.

Which is your best option, trying to work out with a partner or training solo? Many enjoy solitude and simply want to blast music on their headphones while training. On the other hand, there are those who would not be caught dead working out alone and need a partner. As long as you are happy and getting in an effective workout then it does not matter who you train with, but if you need a bit of a change, read some of the points below if you are still unsure if you should train with a partner or go at it alone.

Reasons to Train Solo:

-Work at your own pace.
-Stay focused on your goal.
-Do not have to worry on others arriving on time or the pressure of making it on time if you happen to be running late.
-Stay as long or as little as needed.
-Don’t have to worry about “entertaining” someone by talking or gossiping to pass the time.
-Blast as much music as you would like.

Reasons to Train with a Partner:

-Someone to give you extra motivation.
-Can push and encourage each other.
-Have someone to hold you accountable.
-Someone to spot you when using heavier weight.

I personally enjoy training by myself so that I do not have to wait around for others and can go at my own pace. When I need a spotter, I simply ask someone who is working out near me to help me out during their rest/recovery period. I have never had anyone refuse; most people love to help others out.

How To Pick The Right Partner

If you choose to train with a partner, make sure that your gym partner is just as focused and dedicated as you are. As training partners, you should be able to push each other to get better and stronger, not be chit-chat buddies at the water cooler. With all of your workouts, keeping your intensity levels high is crucial to see change. Talking in between sets and catching up on the latest gossip is only going to serve as a distraction from your goals, your heart rate drops and you may lose focus. If the only way to avoid this is training alone then so be it!

Training should be your time to release daily tension, boost your health and improve your physique. If you feel like your training partner is always late, making excuses and not adding anything to your workout, then it may be time to ditch them and train solo. You can also find a happy medium and pick a few days a week where you have training dates set and the other days you train alone. This may help you get the most out of your workouts. Sometimes it is good to have a bit of a change and having someone with you may make you work even harder. There is nothing wrong with a little healthy competition.

If you are just starting out on your fitness journey, try to pick a training partner who is reliable and is also goal oriented. If you are an advanced gym goer, try to choose a training partner who is at your level of physical fitness or maybe a bit more advanced. This will ensure that you can push each other and you may be able to learn a thing or two from them and their training style. You want to make sure you’re your training partner does not give you the chance to slack off and work at a beginner level- that would defeat the whole purpose.

If you are advanced and are looking to help someone get started, pick a separate time from your training schedule to show them the ropes and help out. We ALL started somewhere with very little knowledge of the weight room, which can be a very scary place to some. So be kind, give back and always try to lend a helping hand to those who ask for it. Be sure to help others who may not be as comfortable and confident in the gym as you are so that you can help improve their life too!

Training Tip: If you need some energy to get through your workouts, try drinking a Celsius 15 minutes before your cardio or strength training routine.
