Do Not Be So Hard On Yourself...

Healthy Living Tip- Be Flexible- During your training and daily life, try not to be so hard on yourself. Nothing in life usually goes smoothly, so learn to be flexible. I am not talking about making excuses for yourself or giving in to temptation just because you feel like it but rather, if you are stuck in traffic and cannot make it to your usual strength and conditioning class, all is not lost! Simply train on your own and try something new.

Healthy Living Tip- Make Good Choices- What if you forgot your lunch on the counter (I have been victim to that far too often), if you cannot run home during your lunch break to get your meals, you won’t instantly gain 10 pounds from eating off of what you had planned. This is not permission to get some greasy fast food instead use this healthy living tip- try going to a place and custom order your meal to be close to what you originally had planned. There are healthy options around every corner, so leaving your lunch is no excuse to become the vending machine vixen.

Healthy Living Tip- Crush Cravings- Whenever I am feeling the afternoon slump set in and I start craving something sugary and sweet, I reach for a Celsius to help me stay on track and keep my temptations under control. After a few minutes, my cravings go away and I can get back to my regular routine.

Cardio Treadmill Workout

Cardio Treadmill WorkoutThe treadmill is one of the most common pieces of cardio workout equipment that you will find in the gym. At times, it can also be one of the most underutilized. Many people hit the quick start button for their cardio treadmill workout and slightly adjust the speed as they see fit, but they forget about the wonderful option to increase the incline. Many simply avoid increasing the incline in their treadmill exercise because increasing the incline on the machine will instantly make your workout harder, but who doesn't like a good challenge? Now- I am not saying to sprint and do your treadmill cardio at  the highest incline, but to get an effective and intense workout you have to switch up the levels of intensity and put in the work!

Below you will find a beginner, intermediate and an advanced Cardio Treadmill Workout. What is even better is that this cardio workout will only take 20 minutes from start to finish. No more hour long walks on the treadmill trying to break a sweat. This cardio workout will get your heart pumping and you will be sweating bullets in no time!

Treadmill Cardio Exercise Tips

Stay Hydrated and Drink Celsius- Grab a Celsius 15 minutes before your treadmill workout routine in order to burn more calories and have the healthy energy you need to train properly. Also be sure to bring a bottle of water with you so that you do not need to take several breaks for the water fountain. Staying hydrated will ensure you have a more effective workout.

Let go of the side rails- The side rails should only be used when needed but not as a crutch. If you feel it necessary to use the side rail, then slow down the speed until you can complete the workout without holding on. You are trying to work you lower body not the upper body with this workout. Get your arms pumping and get to work. By not holding on you will focus on using your legs to really power you up the incline. This will help in sculpting the glutes as well as your hamstrings.

Too easy or too tough- If the beginner cardio treadmill workout program is too easy, then try the intermediate of advanced cardio workout. You may find that as you go up in intensity, you cannot complete the whole workout as prescribed. At that point, drop down the intensity and when you feel like you have caught your breath and can continue, increase the speed again and try to do the best you can. You will only get better and stronger if you push yourself. If you are not exerting yourself do not expect to see rapid changes.

Soft knees- Each step in this cardio exercise routine should not sound like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Be kind to your knees and try to land softly.

Breathing- Sometimes people focus on their breathing too much and it distracts them from enjoying the workout al together. Just breathe as you would naturally and try not to tense up your body.

Relax- During this cardio workout routine, keep your arms slightly bent and pumping by your sides. Keeping them down or too high will make the routine awkward and uncomfortable. Allow your body to move freely rather than being stiff and clunky with each step.

If you are beginning or an experienced marathoner, find the level that works for you to be able to complete the treadmill workout but is challenging you at the same time. In order to see progress, you have to get uncomfortable with your training.

Lessons From a Fast Sprint Duathlon

The FishHawk Triathlon Club held its second event on March 9, 2014 in Riverview, FL! The FishHawk Club is dedicated to promoting the sport of triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon and Xterra racing. The event was a fast Sprint Duathlon (USAT sanctioned) format, sponsored by Just Ride Bicycles. This type of course consists of 1.5 Mile Run, 14 Mile Bike, 3.1 Mile Run. Celsius ambassador, Dennis Navarette, uses Celsius to power through his training sessions and dominate in competitions. Dennis participated in this event and provides a behind the scenes look at what it is like on a duathlon race day.
 

Fast Sprint Duathlon Tips

“For this event, I tagged along with 2 members of the RunVie Racing (www.RunVie.com) club who gave me some pointers for duathlon racing in hopes of shaving several minutes off of my time during my transitions! 


The event started at 7:45am. My beginning pace was about 8 minutes per mile and slowly built it to average 7:05 minutes for the first mile. By the end of the run, I was slightly ahead of my fellow runners. Then, it was time for the first transition. For this event, I was prepared and had my gear laid out. Although this transition was much better than my what-seemed-like-forever transitions from previous events, my fellow racers got their bikes off the racks faster than me...my short lead was also short lived.

While the others may have stolen the lead, I was able to clip my shoes on to my pedals a bit quicker and was off in front of them!

About a mile or so in the bike leg of the race. My race buddies passed me. I tried to keep up but they built a good lead and soon were out of my range.

Of course my friends weren't the only ones who passed me at the first run and bike portions of the race. Several runners and cyclists of all ages, both males and females, passed me! At the end of my bike leg, there were already at least a handful of duathletes finishing lap #1 of the 2 at the end of the race.

At the last leg of the race, a 3.14 mile run, I was way behind my race buddies. I had a lot of ground to catch up! My second transition was not as fast as the first. Someone had taken my spot on the rack! So, I racked the bike just a couple of feet from the original spot. Now I had to manage my way between bike wheels to get to my running shoes!

As I rounded the first corner of my run, my calves started to pulsate and there was a bit of tingling behind my knees! I stopped to stretch them out, taking about 10 second for each leg. I did not want to stretch any longer in fear of seizing completely. Instead, I stretched them out as I ran. I was at about a 10 min/mile pace at this point and my calf muscles were still pulsating! The tingly feeling was still there so I tried to distract myself from thinking about them...just get to the water station!

I took a sip of some water and repeated the same pattern: start slow and incrementally increase my running pace. But this time, a bit faster. My legs finally loosened up and I was able to go at a steady pace. I was happy to have the endurance from Celsius to finish "strong".

I finished the race in 1:21:44, which was a great improvement from my first Duathlon. I can't wait to train for the next one hoping to put what I have learned from these events to use!-
